EndNote Basic

Official site: https://endnote.com/product-details/basic/

EndNote Basic (former EndNote Web) is the free online version of the well-known program to manage bibliographies.

Despite having fewer features than the desktop version, EndNote Basic is a good program to manage references. Actually, there are two versions of EndNote Basic too, one completely free, with very limited options, and the one you can use if your Campus has subscribed a contract with Web of Science, which is precisely the case for Bicocca students.

What does it do:

  • It runs a search on archives and catalogues and allows saving data and turning them into references when you write
  • Gets metadata directly from websites thanks to the plug-in to be installed on the browser
  • Allows sharing of a folder with your research group

Strengths:

  • It is optimized to best interact with database WOS-Web of Science. For those who use it very often, this may be a plus
  • Helps you identify what journal is right for the publication of your article
  • Communicates with iPad through an app that allows you to synchronize data

How to register:

To use EndNote Online just go on his website: http://www.myendnoteweb.com/

Or else you can access to it by database Web of Science, using the button on the top EndNote.

The first time that you access EndNote Web you need to register (free data). Those who already have a personal WOS account instead can use it to log in to EndNote Web.

How to set up your bibliographic archive:

Data can be entered in different ways:

  • by connecting to an online catalogue directly. EndNote Basic can search in many catalogues, though mostly in North America. An effective choice can be to connect to the British Library or Library of Congress catalogues: these two huge libraries have stored millions of data, including probably those of the book you want to cite. This procedure is less effective if you are looking for articles, for which it is better to use the native interface of the catalogue and then import the data. If the book is in Italian you can search for it directly on SBN and then import it directly using the handy Export Endnote button.
  • manually. It is the most adaptable way. You can describe any document you want: book, article, periodical, conference proceeding, web page, geographical map etc. Whatever you want to enter in your archive
  • by importing from a database, from a web site, from another reference manager. There are many compatible software programs; very often, in the database, next to the record you are interested in, appears also an "EndNote" button: use it and the importing of the citation will be practically already done. When the proper button is missing, look for a way to import citations in EndNote format, Reference Manager, or ProCite.

How to organize your archive:

You can create as many folders as you need to manage your references.

You can choose if you want to keep a private group or share with others, allowing them only to see data or else to modify.

How to use your citations:

Through the Word plug-in Cite While You Write you can pick up data from your archive while you are writing and insert the citation you need, in the style you prefer. These will then merge into a perfectly formatted bibliography.

New features:

  • find your journal. A new feature of EndNote Online analyses the title and abstract of an article that you have written and the references you inserted and suggests to you up to ten titles of periodical on which you can publish it. To do this, the program works on citational indexes developed by the Journal of citation report, which assigns every year the impact factor to a scientific journal.
